Part Nine
Quotations
"She didn't know why it was so important, but she enjoyed the fact that the roomful of books belonged to the woman. It was she who introduced her to the library in the first place and gave her the initial, even literal, window of opportunity. This way was better. It all seemed to fit." -- Death, Part Nine (461)
This quote shows the motif of the power of words as well as a good pun, "window of opportunity."

"It kills me sometimes, how people die." -- Death, Part Nine (464)
This quote is first off, hilarious. Secondly, it is a great example of verbal irony.

"It felt nice to be walking up through Molching. The air was sharp and flat, like the Watschen of a sadistic teacher or nun. Her shoes were the only sound of Munich Street." -- Death, Part Nine (472)

This picture of a Stalingrad in winter makes me think of where Michael Holtzapfel lost his arm and fingers.
This picture of a broken leg x-ray reminds me of Hans Hubermann's broken leg.
Connections and Historical Context
This video compiled WW2 plane crashes helps me picture what Rudy and Liesel found after they got out of the basement.
My Questions
- Why did Ilsa leave cookies for Liesel?
- When Liesel returned the plate, why didn't she stay?
- Why doesn't Frau Holtzapfel want to live originally?
- Why did Rudy give the pilot a teddy bear?
My Thoughts and Response
I find it interesting that Ilsa left Liesel cookies. It seems like Ilsa is starting to come out of her shell and get better. I'm glad to see that in the middle of this mess, Liesel is starting to heal from her brother's death and isn't having the nightmares anymore. It made me happy when Hans was told that he was going to get to go home. I wish Alex Steiner could come home too and feel bad that Rudy didn't get him to.
I wish Frau Holtzapfel didn't feel so emotionally distraught and wanted to live. I find it really sad that she doesn't want to live, but I was glad she finally pulled herself together and went to the shelter. It made me happy when Hans returned and I was glad for Liesel and Rosa. It ends with an interesting suspense, Death hinting that Liesel might only live for six more months.
